Mapping
Mapping is a useful mathematical skill. Here is an enjoyable activity that will help your child begin to understand maps.
You will need:
- a large piece of paper
- crayons, pens or pencils.
Here’s what you do:
Map 1- an indoor map.
Ask your child to choose a room to map. Walk around the room together and talk about where things are positioned, for example, ‘The sink is under the window’, or ‘your bed is in the corner’.
Map 2 – an outdoor map.
Take a walk with your child around the home, garden or paddock. Talk about where things are positioned, for example, ‘The tall trees are behind the house’, or ‘the veggie garden is by the fence’. Collect things as you go: leaves from the tree, wool off the fence, feathers from the chicken house and so on.
When you have finished draw a map together, discussing where you went as you draw it. Then encourage your child to tape or staple some of the collected materials onto the map where they were found.
