Communication Goal 4: Children discover different ways to be creative and expressive.
Exploration Goal 4 Children develop working theories for making sense of the natural world:
Here are some ideas for a listening experience using your environment. All you need is yourself and your ears ready to listen to lots of different sounds! You can go for a walk outside or if it’s a really cold day, go on a listening walk inside.
I wonder what sounds you will hear?
- Birds calling
- Animal sounds
- Vehicle noises
- Water sounds
- Wind blowing
You could help focus your child’s attention on sounds before your walk, ask open ended questions such as, ‘What kinds of sounds do you think we will hear on our walk?’ ‘Where should we go to hear lots of sounds?’ As you walk, encourage your child to tell you about the sounds they hear. Help them use descriptive words such as loud, soft, banging, roaring, and ringing.
After the walk, you might like to talk about the sounds you heard. You can try to re-create the sounds using only your voice.
