Musical Line - making music together.
Te Whāriki curriculum link
Communication, Goal 4: Children develop an ability to be creative and expressive through making music.
A music line is a fun way for children to learn about musical sounds when making their own music. Try setting up a small table with a variety of items which make different sounds. Items you can use include pieces of drift wood, shells, spoons, old pot lids – anything in fact that has a sound. Hanging items from a clothes line outside may capture children's interest.
Encourage your child to experiment, explore and talk about the different sounds each item makes:
- when using different beaters (wooden hammers, rubber hammer, spoons)
- when struck in different places
- when struck with long versus short sound
- when struck with loud versus soft sounds
- ringing sounds verses dull sounds
- what happens when the item is held as it is struck
- play a tune along the line and encourage your child to imitate it
- encourage your child to make up their own tune using all the items on the line.
Have fun making music together.
