Pressing Flowers

Creating with flowers and leaves can give your child pleasure and satisfaction, as well as a greater understanding of plants and the natural environment.
You can buy a flower press but a homemade one is just as effective.

Exploration goal 2:
Children experience an environment where they gain confidence in and control of their bodies.
You will need
- a variety of flowers, leaves, grasses, seed-heads
- hard-covered books or pieces of board or plywood
- absorbent paper
- pieces of card
- weights, such as bricks or heavy books
Lay two or three sheets of newsprint on the board.
Place a single layer of dry flowers on the newsprint.
Don’t overlap them.
Cover with another sheet of newsprint, then a piece of card.
Several layers of newsprint, flowers and card can be built up, ending with a layer of newsprint.
Finally, lay another book or board on tip and weight it with the bricks.
Keep in a dry place with good air circulation.
Leave to press for a minimum of two weeks.
Mark the date on a calendar.
