It helps if you can see the particles close up. Here is a picture of a substance in a test tube, viewed under a very powerful microscope.

The substance has been frozen so that its particles move slowly.

Notice that the particles are not all the same. Some particles are single atoms and others are made up of two atoms.  This substance is a mixture.
