You'll need:
- a spirit burner
- two test-tubes
- 4 cm of magnesium ribbon
- citric acid or tartaric acid
- some warm water

special particle You'll need:

Put about 1 cm of
citric acid or tartaric acid into a dry test-tube and pour in 3 cm of warm
water. Shake the tube gently until all the powder has dissolved. This is
your acid solution. |

| 2 | Fold the magnesium ribbon so that it can easily fit into your other test tube and drop it in. | 
|
| 3 | Light your spirit burner. |
|
| 4 | Pour 2 cm of the acid solution onto the magnesium ribbon and put your thumb over the end of the test-tube. | |
| 5 | What do you see in the test-tube?

| 6 | Keep your thumb over the end of
the test tube for a minute.
|
|
| 7 | Then take your thumb off and hold the open
end of the test-tube close to the flame of the spirit burner. |

| 8 | What do you hear?
