Peter changes his world

Year 8 TCS student Peter Williams has taken a community problem into his own hands.
The 12-year-old student, who lives near Luganville, Vanuatu, recently noticed that people had no place to sit while they waited at the local truck stop, after their old seat broke and was not replaced.
So, Peter decided to tie this problem into his TCS work and came up with an action plan to build a new bench seat for the local people for his Te Ara Hou unit ‘I Can Change My World’.
“The truck stop is right by the road outside Talua where people sit waiting for trucks to come and take them into town every day. They did have a seat but it is broken and has been for a while,” says Peter.
“I decided to build the seat when Mum and I were sitting there and all the woman were sitting on the ground.”
Peter’s teacher Sandy Dougherty says his idea was brilliant.
“Peter saw a need in his local area and was able to provide help by putting his plan into action. It shows great initiative by bringing together his family and locals in a community project, and all brought about through the ideas and actions of a 12 year old!”
